Perched at an altitude of 8,600 feet (2,620 meters) in the northern part of Sikkim, Lachung is a charming Lepcha village situated 121 km from Gangtok. The village, whose name translates to "Small Pass," is renowned for its lush rhododendron forests, cascading waterfalls, and traditional Bhutia houses. With the Lachung River meandering through, the place exudes serenity, making it an ideal destination for nature lovers and peace seekers. Lachung serves as the gateway to the enchanting Yumthang Valley, one of Sikkim’s most spectacular natural wonders.

By Air

The nearest airport is Bagdogra Airport (IXB), located about 195 km from Lachung. From there, travellers can hire a taxi or take a shared cab to Gangtok and then continue to Lachung.
By Rail

The closest railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP) in Siliguri, about 190 km from Lachung.
By Road

From Gangtok: The journey to Lachung takes approximately 6–7 hours, covering scenic mountain roads and breathtaking landscapes. Taxis and shared cabs are available from Gangtok.
Lachung can not be reached directly from any of these places. The North Sikkim region is a restricted area and there are special permits required for a visit to North Sikkim. Tourists have to come to Gangtok and stay there overnight for documentation purposes. So all North Sikkim tours including tours to Lachung originate and end at Gangtok.
Yumthang Valley – The Valley of Flowers
Situated at an altitude of 12,000 feet (3,660 meters) and just 24 km from Lachung, Yumthang Valley is a mesmerizing alpine paradise. This breathtaking valley, close to the tree line, is blanketed with vibrant flowers in March-May, especially rhododendrons and orchids. The Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary, home to over 24 species of rhododendrons, adds to the valley’s floral splendour. During winter, Yumthang transforms into a snow-covered wonderland, attracting adventure enthusiasts and photographers.

For a one-night itinerary, travellers typically arrive in Lachung by afternoon, spend the night, and set out early the next morning to visit Yumthang Valley before heading back to Gangtok. Those staying for two nights can enjoy a more relaxed experience, with additional time for local sightseeing, exploring Lachung village, and soaking in the serene beauty of the surroundings.

Clothing: Warm layers and sturdy shoes are recommended due to unpredictable weather.

Altitude Sickness: Carry necessary medicines and stay hydrated. Lachung is just 8600 feet high so altitude sickness is unlikely here, but one may face altitude sickness during the visit to Yumthang Valley and Yumesamdong.
